TMO - NP

The Traffic Management Operative (TMO – NP) workshop provides the foundational theory knowledge required for those maintaining pre-established Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) sites. This one-day workshop aligns with NZQA Unit Standard 31959, replacing the former NZTA TMO Non-Practising warrant.

Trainees will gain an understanding of TTM processes, risks, responsibilities, and safe work practices, making it an essential course for those in non-practising roles or progressing toward advanced TTM qualifications, such as TMO Practising or STMS.

General Overview

This workshop aims to:

  • Equip trainees with essential knowledge to operate safely and effectively in non-practising TMO roles.
  • Provide a stepping stone for those pursuing practising or advanced TTM qualifications.
  • Prepare trainees to manage lower-risk TTM sites and implement minor setups on the shoulder or berm.
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a TMO.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of stakeholder and operational requirements in TTM.
  • Recognise TTM risks and implement safe work procedures in various road environments.
  • Your National Student Number (NSN)
  • A form of identification (Drivers Licence or Passport)
  • There are no formal prerequisites; however, it is highly recommended that trainees complete Unit Standard 31958: TTM Worker prior to attending.
  • Alternatively, trainees with equivalent skills and knowledge may enrol directly in this course.
  • Once achieved, the Unit Standard 31959 will remain on the trainee’s NZQA Record of Achievement for life.
  • Regular learning and competency assessments are required under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA).

  • The assessment is theory-based, consisting of 12 questions completed progressively throughout the workshop.
  • No practical tasks are included in this assessment.
